A lot of the contractors I used were either past professionals I had worked with on smaller projects for our home or through qualified referrals. The single best way to locate a good contractor is through a personal referral. A personal referral will give you the best insight on someone’s past work and their honest opinion. If you can’t find a particular contractor in a given trade or even if you can and would like to read more testimony about them, I would highly recommend Angie’s List.
I am an Angie’s List subscriber and can attest for its usefulness. I personally located my painter and plumber using this service. The testimonials are pretty candid and you can quickly assess a contractor’s performance on past jobs and read what people had to say in detail about they liked or didn’t like about their work.
